This post introduces my new GRE Vocabulary Flashcards app, designed to help students master words through context-based learning instead of rote memorisation.
Memorising GRE words from a list rarely works. The exam doesn’t test your vocabulary directly. Insteady, it tests whether you understand how a word fits into a sentence through its text completion and sentence equivalence questions.
That’s why these flashcards are built around context-based learning rather than rote memorisation.
Each card presents a GRE-level word used in an authentic sentence. You read the sentence first, try to infer the meaning, and then flip the card to see the definition. This trains you to recognise tone, connotation, and subtle differences in usage, exactly what GRE Verbal questions demand.
GRE flashcards
The app is simple and fast: use arrow keys to move between cards and the spacebar to flip them. It’s currently an early version, with upcoming features like marking favourites, skipping known words, and spaced repetition for better retention.
These flashcards are curated from high-frequency GRE wordlists but presented in a way that helps you use the words, not just recall them. For maximum retention, shuffle them to prevent them from appearing in alphabetical order.
If you’ve ever struggled to remember abstract definitions or mix up similar words, this method will make your learning stick.
Please try it and share your feedback. Your input helps shape the next version.
